sailing with Tom

Being a long-time member of ASI/AYH, and having only 'known of" Tom Langelier as 1 of the advanced sailors and prior president of the Club, I was quite pleased to learn that he would be the captain of a sail in Georgian Bay that had been opened to non-keelboat Club members - I think around 2004.  His confidence and competence as a sailor were evident in the relaxed manner he headed up that week.  One non-sailing aspect of that trip that I'll always remember was he woke us every morning with classical music!  Such an enjoyable and classy way to get the day going.  And being mostly a listener to his commentary on most any subject with any of the crew, I was impressed with his vast range of topics.  I last saw Tom a couple springs ago as we both were working to get a keelboat ready for the season.  He had offered to be the boat captain so was taking on the responsibility of fixing what appeared to be the unfixable. As he worked long and hard on whatever the task was, I was impressed with his stamina and determination - especially since he had revealed that he was having some physical limitations.  When he didn't renew the following season, I missed knowing that he was still a part of ASI....then was saddened with the news of his death.  My condolences to his family and close friends, but  I wish you smiles in recalling his interesting and adventurous life.
