Funeral Mass for Richard L. Bierce, 73, of Mentor, will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Bede the Venerable Church, 9114 Lake Shore Blvd., Mentor, OH 44060. Fr. Tim Plavac will officiate. Mr. Bierce passed away Monday, April 4, 2011, at Hospice House of the Western Reserve in Cleveland with his family at his side. Born Sept. 9, 1937, in Mercer, Pa., he had been a Lake County resident for 43 years, living in Mentor. He was a member of St. Bede the Venerable Church in Mentor, Knights of Columbus Council 13755 and Mentor Senior Center. He was a former Boy Scouts, Scout Master and loved scrapping and fishing, but most of all, he loved and enjoyed his truck. Mr. Bierce was a retired crane operator, working 35 years at Castle Metals. He was the beloved husband of 43 years to Mary A. (Vargo) Bierce; loving father of Cheryl L. (Joe) Thomas of Mentor-on-the-Lake; cherished grandfather of Alana N. Swetel and Jolene D. Swetel; brother of Patricia Hauck, Cheryl Richards and James Bierce; and uncle of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Robert Bierce and Cecile Jean Bierce. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center St., (Route 615, north of Route 2), Mentor. Burial will be in All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township. Donations in his name may be made in care of the family.
