Gerald M. Smith, age 80, of Mentor, passed away Friday, Feb. 26, 2015, at TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Twp.
He was born Oct. 14, 1934, in Blough, Pennsylvania.
Gerald worked for Euclid Hitachi until its shutdown and retired from General Motors in 2002.
He was a parishioner of St. Bede the Venerable Church in Mentor and is a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and spending time with his family. Gerald was well known for always lending a helping hand to family, friends, and strangers.
He was the beloved husband of 59 years to Barbara L. (nee DiMuzio) Smith; loving father of Geraldine (Steven) Anderson of Mentor, Patrick (Tina Bonzilla) Smith of Bellingham, Washington, Jeannette (Dennis) Mace of Harpersfield, Carole Lynn (Walter) Johnson of Mentor-on-the-Lake, Anthony Smith of Mentor; devoted grandfather of 17; great-grandfather of 22; great-great-grandfather of two; cherished brother of Irene (Frank) Hribar of Dunlo, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, Leo P. and Irene (nee Blough) Smith; his grandson, Gerald Conomy; his brothers, Dennis Smith, Owen Smith, Phillip Smith; and his sisters, Angus Champman, Mary Boyer, Arlene Brewer.
Family will receive friends at the McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center Street (Rt. 615, N. of Rt. 2), Mentor, on Tuesday from 12 to 2 and 5 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens, Chesterland.
Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Bede the Venerable Church, 9114 Lakeshore Blvd., Mentor. Fr. Tim Plavac, officiating.
