Obituary for Gilbert S Yondo

Gilbert S  Yondo
Gilbert S. Yondo, age 89, of Wickliffe, passed away peacefully March 17, 2015, at the Ohio Veteran’s Home in Sandusky.
He was born July 5, 1925, in Cleveland to Geza and Helen (Hegedish) Yondo.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served our country in the South Pacific during World War II, LCT Flotilla 5 and LCT Group 13, and maintained a lifelong respect for the American flag and what it represented.
Gil was a hard-working and dedicated employee of Republic/LTV Steel and retired from LTV as a crane operator.
Gil loved his family deeply and enjoyed exercising, gardening, fishing, diving and swimming, hunting, softball and bringing joy to children as Santa. His favorite breakfast hangout was Brueggers in Willoughby Hills. All who knew him will remember his ever-present smile, fun-loving nature, adventuresome spirit and his generosity.
The family give a heartfelt thanks to all his caregivers at the VA, OVH-Sandusky and Stein Hospice.
Gil is survived by his devoted daughters, Rita Musk of Mentor, Rebecca Yondo of Wickliffe and Theresa Yondo (Bruce Murphy) of South Russell; cherished grandson, Daniel (Michelle) Musk; sister, Patrice (Richard) Hammitt of Kings Mt., N.C., brother-in-law, Frank (Chich) DiRocco; sister-in-law, Shirley Yondo; many friends, extended family, nieces and nephews and “cats.”
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Mary (DiRocco) Yondo, April 9, 2004; precious first born child, Timothy; parents; and brother, Don formerly of Grand Rapids, Mich.
Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 28, 2015, at St. Bede the Venerable Church, 9114 Lakeshore Blvd., Mentor, OH 44060. Fr. Tim Plavac will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour before Mass at the church. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland.
Arrangements are entrusted to McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Homes in Willoughby and Mentor.
