Celebration of Life services for Charles J. Schlegel Jr., 73, of Mentor, will be 5 p.m. Sunday, at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center St. (Route 615, north or Route 2), Mentor.
Mr. Schlegel passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at his residence in Mentor.
Born Oct. 21, 1942, in Euclid, he had been a Lake County resident for the past 31 years.
He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran and member of AMVETS Post 109. He loved softball, playing from 1967 to 1990, as and outfielder and pitcher for Gene’s Sunoco, Lach’s Bar, Pyramid Café, N.F.M.F., and Red Baron. He played in the P.D. Major, Parma MJR, Euclid MJR, and Lakewood MJR Leagues and in National Tournaments and was National Championship team of Pyramid Café in 1975. Chuck was named All City Player three times, All World 2nd Team in 1975, Power/Speed, and inducted into the Greater Cleveland Slo-Pitch Hall of Fame in 1998.
He was the beloved husband of 45 years to Susan (nee Gregorski) Schlegel; loving father of Charles J. (Tanya) Schlegel III and Jenalle M. Schlegel; cherished grandfather of Rick, Shannon and Charles J. IV; brother of Laura (John) Lee and Jeanette (Paul) Setty; and uncle of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles J. and Jean (nee Richey) Schlegel.
Family will receive friends from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
