The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Richard Bowden can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

Richard Bowden's death came as a shock--as the death of someone loved or well-regarded always does. My cousin Richard was fourteen years my senior, and he and I spent a good amount of time together. We saw each other mainly, but not only, when I was growing up and on regular summer vacations with my mother in Painesville. Especially I remember happily going bowling with Richard, helping him on his newspaper delivery route, swimming at the YMCA pool with him, and enjoying the sun and the water at the beach at Lake Erie. We talked a lot, we laughed, we were lively. We were friends. It was only in later years that I understood something of the burden of Richard's health problems, both physical and mental, and so undeserved. Richard's condition was pitiable. But Richard himself was so admirable. He had a strong sense of duty in what he did, which I can still see in a look of determination on his face. He also observed people perceptively, and he could tell you things about them that you hadn't noticed. Richard's sense of humor could make you laugh at odd moments, and he had a solid musical talent, too, in the piano, and in singing. Perhaps most enviably, though, Richard had the remarkable and enduring ability to bear whatever bad things--through absolutely no doing of his own--befell him. Richard Bowden was one of the good guys, easy to be with, and I liked him a lot. I miss him.
