Memorial services for Sam Thomas Aquila, 83, of Painesville, will be 3 p.m. Saturday at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center St. (Route 615, north of Route 2), Mentor. Fr. Dave Woost will officiate.
Mr. Aquila passed away March 9, 2015, at Metro Health Medical Center in Cleveland.
Born Sept. 29, 1931, in Euclid, he had lived in Collinwood before moving to Painesville Township.
Sam was a U. S. Army veteran, serving as a Sergeant First Class during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. Mr. Aquila was proud of his Catholic faith. He was a graduate of Collinwood High School and attended Fenn College. He was also a gymnast at Turners Gymnastics, member of the American Legion and V.F.W., and loved to spend time with family and friends. Sam taught his sons to find a job you love and you’ll never work another day in your life.
Mr. Aquila loved being a salesman for 56 years. He worked at Amster Beverage, started a family business in 1959, JDS Distributors, wholesalers of beer, wine, water and juice, which was sold in 1992. He was also a salesman for Heidelberg Distributors the last 18 years.
He was the beloved husband of Helen A. (nee McMahon); loving father of Paul (Pat), Pat (Jackie), Sal, Brian (Monica), Ken (Connie), and Frank Greenwood; cherished grandfather of Phillip, Miriam, Emily, Mike, Danielle, George (Lindsay), Sam (Katie), Sal Jr., Alex, Clarice, Kara, Kyle and Corinne; great-grandfather of Kate, Eli, June, Penny and Blake; brother-in-law of Sandy; cousin of Shirley; and uncle of Tommy (Julie). He also leaves many other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Giuseppe and Carmela (nee Bevacqua) Aquila; siblings, Joe (Louise), Andy (Carmela), Tommy, Francy (Ralph), Tony, Sam, and Dante (Julie); and nephew, Joey.
Family will receive friends from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home prior to the service.
