Obituary for Virginia Jean "Ginger" McVean

Virginia Jean “Ginger” McVean, born April 24, 1938, in Hamtramck, Mich., died peacefully Feb. 27, 2022, in Willoughby. To her friends and family she was affectionately known as “Ginger.”
She was married to Duncan E. McVean, Ph.D.; mother of Cynthia (Stephen) Marrinan and Scott (Karen) McVean; and grandmother of Christopher and Erin Marrinan and of Aiden and Gavin McVean.
Her parents, Marion and Jean Cibor, emigrated from Poland and realized the “American Dream” of home and business ownership. Growing up, she worked in the family business, became the record librarian for WJR in Detroit, and then attended Eastern Michigan University, where she earned her B.S. and M.A. degrees in education.
As an educator, she was certified to teach in grades K thru 12 including Special Ed. Her career took her to private and public schools. Ginger loved to sing with the Greater Cleveland Sweet Adelines Barbershop Chorus and its fun quartets for 10 years and participated in local, state and national competitions. She also loved to act, sing, and play guitar in various productions of Solon Players. Her club memberships included New Clevelanders Wives club, P.T.A., Church, Parkinson’s Support Groups and she was an award-winning member of Toastmaster’s International in Cincinnati. She traveled both nationally and internationally with her husband and children. On one trip with her husband, she traveled around the world. In her later years, travel was limited to Washington State and Michigan to visit her grandchildren.
Please join the family for a Celebration of Life from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at The Abbey of Willoughby, 38011 Euclid Ave. (located on the grounds of McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home), in Willoughby with the Celebration Service to begin at 3 p.m. If you wish to share a brief remembrance, please let the family know via an email to moontartan@ameritech.net or a phone message at 440-951-6290.
