Obituary for Klaus Kaminski

Klaus Kaminski, 82, of Richmond Heights, passed away Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023, at his home.
Klaus was born in Allenstein, East Prussia in 1940 during turbulent times. He was the youngest of three children.
He and his family were refugees, and eventually settled in Hamburg, Germany. Klaus studied baking and International cooking from a very young age, and used that skill to earn a living as a chef on freighter ships in the German Merchant Marines. His eight years in the Merchant Marines allowed him the opportunity to experience many adventures while he traveled the world, and afforded him the ability to take care of his mother in Hamburg. Klaus left the Merchant Marines and settled in Cleveland in 1968, where he met Karen and started his family. There are two things that stand out about Klaus. He was a talented chef, and skilled sailor. For those that used to dine at the family restaurant in South Euclid, The Galley, you would know that anything he prepared, whether it be a hamburger, a fish fry, or an authentic German duck roast with spätzle, that you were about to be treated to an amazing meal. In the summers, Klaus and his family would explore all five of the Great Lakes on the family sailboat, Rasmus. Being on the water was an instrumental part of Klaus’s life. He was a long standing member of Northeast Yacht Club in Cleveland, and was an active member of Lake Erie Solo Sailors in the 80’s and 90’s. He has logged over 2,000 nautical miles racing as a solo sailor, and won many flags as evidence of his superior skill.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Karen (nee Kubu); daughter, Kelley (Michael) West; brother-in-law, Edward (Mary Lou) Kubu; niece, Lisa (Edmund) Alemagno (their children, Alyssa and Brandon); and cousins in Germany.
Klaus was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Elisabeth (nee Kannapin) Kaminski; siblings, Ulrich (Lisa, dec.) Kaminski, and Margarete Kaminski, all of whom were from Germany.
A celebration of Klaus’ life will be held at a later date.
"May you have fair winds and following seas."
