Funeral Mass for Joseph A. “Bubba” Weiland, age 62 of Willoughby will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Magdalene Church, 32114 Vine St., Willowick. Father Steve Breck will officiate
Surrounded by family, Joe was called home Thursday, March 11, 2021, at Lake West Medical Center.
Joe was born Dec. 19, 1958, in Cleveland. He had been a resident of Lake County for more than 60 years, living in Willowick before moving to Willoughby.
He was a 1977 graduate of Eastlake North High School. Joe was employed in the insurance field for 15 years having previously worked for Nationwide Insurance and was currently employed with National General Insurance.
Joseph was the beloved husband of 39 years of JoAnn (nee Radicella) Weiland; loving father of Taylor R. (Mark) Gray; brother of Lorraine A. (Albert) Buchynsky, Susan M. (Bruce) Richert, and Patricia A. (Robert) Pinkney; uncle of Robert T. Pinkney, Amber M. Yeager, Geoffrey J. Pinkney, Matthew M. Richert, Marc C. Richert, Angela L. Kane, Lisa M. Buchynsky, Albert P. Buchynsky Jr., and Michael A. Buchynsky; and many other nieces and nephews. Joe was Godfather to Robert T. Pinkney, Danielle Tarajcak, Jeanette Gorham and Jeffrey Baker.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph J. and Ruth I. (nee Stanovcak) Weiland.
Joe was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, godfather, and friend. If asked, JoAnn would always say, they first met under a “Blue-Light-Special” (K-mart). Forty-one years of love shared was highlighted when they received their greatest blessing, a Christmas miracle, their only child Taylor was born, with her tiny blue eyes peering from a Christmas stocking as the three of them arrived home that snowy December night. Joe would then welcome Taylor’s husband Mark into the family with a bright smile and open heart, loving him as a son and friend. Joe “Bubba” was known far and wide as a fierce competitor and loved not only playing baseball but organizing and managing the teams he played on. His baking skills were second only to his favorite donut shop Biagio’s. His love of cooking was exemplified by his famous egg sandwiches. He loved growing his vegetables and took great pride in his sunflowers and rose bush. His skills on the dance floor flourished as the “Conductor” of the “Love Train.” “Freakishly Smart,” Joe enjoyed board games, card games, and winning his Sunday Rummy card game with JoAnn, occasionally letting her win. Joe also found great joy vacationing, camping, wrestling with his grand puppies, and an occasional trip to a casino or two. Without exception nor expectation of any sort of repayment (refusing it if offered), a smile on his face and a joke on his breath, Joe was always there for friends and family in need. His giving continues through organ and platelet donation. Joe’s family was and always will be his love and his legacy.
Family will receive friends from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Ave., Willoughby. Burial will follow the Mass at All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township.
