Obituary for John E Tigue Jr.

Funeral Mass for John E. Tigue Jr., 79, of Willoughby, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church, 37940 Euclid Ave., Willoughby.
John passed away Monday, March 7, 2022, at UH Lake West Medical Center in Willoughby with family by his side.
Born Jan. 8, 1943, in Willoughby, he was a lifetime resident of Willoughby.
John believed in service to his community. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Willoughby, where he served as a lector and Eucharistic minister; he was a member of the Willoughby Knights of Columbus Third Degree Council 2886. John was a charter member of the Willoughby Evening Lions Club, where he served as President, Secretary, and on the Board of Directors, and was recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship. He was a member of the Irish American Club-East Side Inc. in Euclid, having served as a board member and then as Club Parliamentarian for many years. John was a Past President and former member of the Board of Directors for the Willoughby Chamber of Commerce, and named that organizations Distinguished Citizen of the year in 1986. He was elected to the Willoughby-Eastlake Board of Education, serving from 1984 to 1987.
John’s first career was in education, teaching American History, government and economics, and serving as Booster Moderator and Tennis Coach at St. Joseph’s High School from 1965-1970. After leaving teaching, he was the City of Willoughby’s first full-time Recreation Director; then later served as Clerk of Council and as Assistant Finance Director. John then spent the rest of his working career employed at CT Consultants from 1979 until his retirement in 2020.
John loved his two granddaughters dearly and enjoyed spending time with them. During the Covid-19 pandemic he helped (and enjoyed) assisting with their virtual education.
He was the loving husband of 53 years to Joan E. (nee Schneider) Tigue; loving father of Elizabeth A. “Beth” Tigue-Matos (Ed Matos); cherished grandfather of Mia and Fiona; dear brother of William N. Tigue and Mary Ellen (Ray) Catania; brother-in-law of Bob Maver; and uncle of nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John E. and Rose (nee Delsantro) Tigue; siblings, Susan Maver and infant sister, Elizabeth Tigue; sister-in-law, Paulette Tigue; and nephew, Billy Tigue.
Family will receive friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center St. (Route 615, north of Route 2), in Mentor. Burial will follow the Mass at Willoughby Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name are suggested to Immaculate Conception Church, 37940 Euclid Ave., Willoughby, OH 44094, or to the “City of Willoughby Fire Department,” for the purchase of a new LUCAS Chest Compression Machine.
