Obituary for Jack O. Schierloh

Jack Oscar Schierloh, 90, of Willoughby, peacefully passed away Feb. 18, 2024, surrounded by family.
He was born June 2, 1933, in Ottawa, to parents, Oscar and Edna.
Jack graduated from Ottawa High School, received a bachelor’s degree in business from Bowling Green State University, and received a master’s in theology degree from Oberlin School of Theology.
He married Jane, the love of his life, in 1960, who passed away in 2020.
Jack is survived by son, Jay (Stacey); daughter, Jackie; son, Tim (Teri); 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Jack was predeceased by parents, Oscar and Edna; and sister, Jane Gregg.
Jack served as a minister in the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church for his entire career. He was passionate serving people and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Jack served thousands of people in seven different Methodist churches in the inner city of Cleveland and several suburbs over 50 years.
Jack was determined from a young age to serve people in the inner city. He began as a “street preacher” listening to and helping people in Cleveland’s west side. He put people first in his ministry. Jack was known for visiting the sick in hospitals and the elderly in nursing homes. He worked tirelessly to remember the names of the people he served in every church. In retirement, he met with and encouraged many men at the 2100 Men’s Shelter. He would say, “I just listen to them.”
Jack was known for multiple sayings he learned from his father Oscar John Schierloh. “Oil is the life blood of a car,” “Education is something they can never take away from you,” and “This is going to hurt me more than it will hurt you.”
Jack was passionate about dogs. His childhood dog, Skipper, and his long-haired dachshund companion, Bubbles, preceded him in death. Jane was allergic to dog fur. Therefore, Jack made many canine friends and always carried dog biscuits in his pockets so he could deliver tasty treats to many neighborhood dogs on his daily walk.
A remembrance service for family and friends will be held soon to celebrate the lives of both Jack and Jane.
Arrangements are entrusted to McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Homes in Willoughby and Mentor.
