Obituary for Frank B "Smitty" Schmidt Jr.
Frank B. “Smitty” Schmidt Jr., 91, of Mentor-on-the-Lake, passed away Monday, March 21, 2022, at UH Lake West Medical Center in Willoughby.
Born Feb. 11, 1931, in Cleveland, he had been a resident of Lake County for 61 years, living in Wickliffe, Willoughby and Madison before moving to Mentor-on-the-Lake.
Frank was an avid Cleveland sports fan, a member of a local seniors golf league until age 87, and still worked part-time until the age of 90. He cherished family gatherings and looked forward to events such as the annual Pig Roast and Breakfast In The Park.
Mr. Schmidt retired from Service Stamping Inc. of Willoughby, where he had worked as a quality control supervisor with 42 years of service.
Frank was the beloved husband of 41 years to Shirley M. (nee Black) Schmidt; loving father of Kirk E. (Deborah) Schmidt, Kent A. (Eileen) Schmidt, Debra L. Trandel, Linda M. (Charles) Croaker, Cheryl A. (Jerry) Nolin, and Patricia A. Dempsey; cherished grandfather of Amie (Joseph) Melendez, Shawn Schmidt, Megan Lundblad (fiancé, Steven), Maren Dempsey, Shannon Dempsey (fiancé, AJ), Lesley (John) Trandel Palenske, Alicia Ramirez, Chris (Melissa) Croaker, Anthony (Jillian) Croaker, Steven Ross, and Jessica; great-grandfather of Cooper Melendez, Delaney Schmidt, Christian, AJ, Dominic and Layla Croaker, Paige and Bowen Palenske, Nigea Clark, Kiera Clark and Aaron Ramirez; great-great-grandfather of one; dear brother of Florence Kiminas; and uncle of many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank B. Sr. and Lottie (nee Konik) Schmidt; and brother-in-law, Stanley Kiminas.
Family will receive friends from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at The Abbey of Willoughby, 38011 Euclid Ave. (located on the grounds of McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home), in Willoughby, with a Celebration of Life service at 4:30 p.m. Burial will be private.
