Funeral Mass for David W. Birtley, 55, of Mentor, will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Vianney Church, 7575 Bellflower Road, Mentor.
David passed away Saturday, May 22, 2021, with his loving family by his side.
Born Aug. 8, 1965, in Cleveland, he had been a lifetime resident of Lake County.
David was a member of St. John Vianney Church in Mentor, a craftsman, loved woodworking and enjoyed making things, but traveling across the country watching his kids play baseball was his top priority. Music was his life and he had played in many bands.
David was a Lieutenant serving the City of Mentor-on-the-Lake as a Firefighter/Fire Investigator. He also had a private pilot license and enjoyed flying.
He was the beloved husband of 27 years to Caterina M. (nee Spinosa) Birtley; loving father of Arial M. Birtley and Nathan D. Birtley; dear brother of Laurie (Jim) O’Leary and Bob (Sharon) Birtley; brother-in-law of Mike Grdina; and uncle and great-uncle of many.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Robert W. and Janet M. (nee Gehring) Birtley; sister, Debbie Grdina; and father-in-law, Mario Spinosa.
Family will receive friends from 1 to 3 and 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Ave., Willoughby, with a Mentor-on-the-Lake Fire Department Service at 8:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mentor Cemetery.
