Obituary for Wendy Lee Platzar

Wendy Lee Platzar
Funeral Mass for Wendy Lee (nee Hart) Platzar, 73, of Willoughby, will be 10 a.m. Friday, March 8, at Immaculate Conception Church, 37940 Euclid Ave., Willoughby. Fr. Michael Troha will officiate.
Wendy passed away Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2024, in Willoughby.
Born June 24, 1950, Wendy was a lifelong Willoughby resident who loved being involved in her community.
Wendy was a Willoughby South High School graduate, Class of 1968, and attended The Ohio State University and Kent State University. Always looking to do what she could to make her community a better place, Wendy was part of numerous organizations including the Willoughby Junior Women’s Club and the Willoughby-Eastlake Schools Foundation. She made lifelong friends and found a passion for working with special needs children during her time at Royalview Elementary and the Willoughby-Eastlake Preschool. She then moved on to serve as the secretary at Edison Elementary before retiring.
Family was always first for Wendy. She and her husband, Frank, set an example of love and commitment for all who knew them. They shared their joys and burdens and built a life together, making a point to create memories with family and friends. Wendy maintained family connections sending cards and notes across the country, never missing a birthday or special occasion for her many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
An active Mom, Wendy never hesitated to jump into her kids’ activities and sports with both feet. In addition to attending countless concerts, plays, and talent shows, Wendy was a Girl Scout leader, and was very active in the Browning and Edison Elementary PTAs. She coached softball for the Willoughby baseball league, and cheered for her kids at every soccer, football, and baseball game, swim meet and wrestling match or tournament. Wendy was an avid sports fan and put her love of sports into action as she coached volleyball and cheerleading at South High for many years. Wendy was a tireless advocate for Rebel student-athletes, serving several terms as president of the Rebel Mother’s Club. Beside her husband, Frank, Wendy was an unsung hero, working tirelessly behind the scenes making sure 25 years of South High sporting events went off without a hitch.
More than anything, Wendy was a proud Grandma. Her 9 grandchildren were at the center of her heart.
She loved hosting sleepovers and going to breakfast together after Sunday Mass. She cheered for all the kids’ sports at every level from little league to high school. Summer Saturday mornings were always spent at Stinger swim meets, and her evenings were filled with volleyball, soccer, baseball, and softball games. She loved when games were at Todd Field and could watch the kids playing on different fields at the same time. Weekends brought competitive cheer competitions, high school swim meets, and both flag and tackle football games. Win or lose she always made sure to let her grandchildren know how proud she was, and the most important thing was to have fun.
A woman of strong Catholic faith, Wendy taught 8th grade PSR and the Confirmation class at Immaculate Conception Church for 25 years. She continued to share her love of God with her grandchildren, guiding them through their Faith studies.
Wendy was the loving mother of Lisa M. (Dave) Yerse, Dan Platzar, Christian M. (Meggen) Platzar, Mark J. Platzar and Derrick S. Platzar; cherished grandmother of Michaela, Brenna, Kylie, Kiera, Mack, Georgia, Bailey, Cora and Ava; sister of Randy (Linda) Hart and Kathy (John) Mikus; cousin of many; and aunt to many more.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 45 years, Frank L. Platzar; mother, Barbara (nee Flanders) Hart; and father, Jay Dan Hart.
Family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Ave., Willoughby. Burial will follow the Mass at All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township.
