Obituary for Thomas Schoen

Funeral Mass for Thomas Schoen, 77, of Euclid, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, 2023, at Our Lady of the Lake, 19951 Lakeshore Blvd., Euclid. Fr. Timothy Plavac and Fr. Joseph Fortuna will officiate.
Mr. Schoen died Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at his residence in Euclid.
Born Jan. 30, 1946, in Cleveland, Thomas attended St. Joseph High School in Cleveland, where he led the varsity football team to a 9-0-1 record his senior year, earning All-Ohio honors. He then accepted a football scholarship to The University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., where he was a consensus All-American in 1967 and helped the team become national champions in 1966.
Drafted by the Cleveland Browns Football team in 1968, he was then quickly drafted by the United States Army. A veteran of the United States Army, he was stationed at Ft. Gordon in Georgia and at Camp Casey in Korea. While in the military as quarterback, Thomas led the 7th Infantry Division football team to an undefeated 8th Army championship. For his exploits on the football field, Thomas was inducted into the VASJ Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.
Thomas was the former owner of Olympic Sporting goods in Cleveland and of Schoen’s Bar & Grill in Euclid. Thomas returned to St. Joseph High School to become assistant football coach in 1988. He was named head coach in 1995, and became the school’s athletic director in 1988. He was married to Mary (née Gallagher) Schoen, and they lived together in Euclid for 54 years. Thomas was a life-long resident of Euclid and for many years, they were parishioners at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Euclid.
He was a devoted father, grandfather, and friend. He didn’t miss a kid’s game, school activity or the opportunity to support loved ones. They loved their poppy. The friendships he cultivated were a cherished part of his life. He loved bringing people together. No one was left out. He created memories that will last a lifetime.
Thomas was the beloved husband of 54 years to Mary A. (née Gallagher) Schoen; loving father of Kristin A. (Patrick) Walsh, Thomas G. Schoen, Kathleen M. Huffman, Timothy P. Schoen, Michael J. (Annie) Schoen; cherished grandfather of Liam, Jack, Tommy, Maeve, Michaela, Sofie, Flynn and Zain; dear brother of Gene Marie Mocilnikar and Norm Schoen; brother-in-law of Dorothy Sheredy Gallagher, Agnes O’Connell, Kathryn “Kay” O’Neill, Peg (Joe) Sweeney, Bill (Joni) Gallagher, Paul (Diana) Gallagher; and the beloved uncle to 54 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman, and Geraldine (née Russell) Schoen; sister, Edith and Bob Claar; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Mildred Gallagher; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Eugene Mocilnikar, John Gallagher, Robert Gallagher, James and Myrna Gallagher, Anne (née Gallagher) Blake and Doug Blake, Kevin O’Neill, Ron O’Connell; nephews, Timothy O’Connell, Daniel Gallagher and Thomas Gallagher; and nieces, Terry O’Connell and Stacie Schoen; His beloved granddaughter, Kara Elizabeth Schoen “Poppy.”
Family will receive friends from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center St., (Route 615, north of Route 2), in Mentor. Interment will be at All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township.
