Obituary for Peter John "Pete" Gecsey

With great sadness it is announced that Peter John “Pete” Gecsey, age 54, passed away Feb. 14, 2023, succumbing to a lingering illness.
Born in September 1968, he was a lifelong resident of Lake and Cuyahoga counties and a Willoughby, resident for most of his life.
Peter was a carpenter by trade and took great pride in his work and in the relationships he developed with his clients. His skills went beyond carpentry though, and he successfully took on just about anything associated with construction and even landscaping.
He was an avid history buff, and he enjoyed old Humphry Bogart movies, art exhibitions, and game night with friends. Pete loved his dogs, listened to country music, and dreamed of travel. He was always game to attend events like the Cleveland Air Show and downtown Willoughby cook-offs and festivals. He was also an impressive chef and grill master, and loved spicy foods. His greatest devotion though was to his family. When his son was very young and his mother needed care, Peter moved in with his mother to help her. He lived there with her for the rest of her life, and they both devoted themselves to his son, John. Non-working time was filled with John’s sports activities, Eastlake Captains games, grill nights, and holidays at his sister’s house.
Peter was the beloved father of John Ross Gecsey; and treasured brother of Dawn Stone.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Jewel A. Gecsey; father, Peter R. Gecsey; brothers, Mitchell and Bill; and brother-in-law, Keeth Stone.
His family and friends will miss him dearly. “Though our hearts are breaking, he would want us to hold only our most treasured memories of him until we can someday reunite with him in spirit.”
Family and friends will gather from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Ave., Willoughby, with a Celebration of Life at 5 p.m.
