Mary passed away Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, in Willoughby.
She was born July 2, 1940, in Cleveland.
After attending a variety of public and parochial schools, Mary was a 1958 graduate of Euclid High School. A homemaker in the early years of marriage, she then went to work at the Cleveland Museum of Art, where she worked for more than 20 years and was able to apply her clerical skills. She was a quiet and private person, never one to dominate a conversation, but who enjoyed time spent with family, friends and neighbors. She also enjoyed reading fiction, travel, work puzzles and selected sports and sitcom TV.
Mary was the beloved wife of more than 60 years to Daniel C. Martens; loving mother of Michael A. (Tina), Kathryn L., and John D. (Michelle); adored grandmother of Sophia A., Lucy R. and Liliana E. “Lily” Martens; dear sister of Joan “Joni” (Bill) Gallagher and John (Linda) Schael; and sister-in-law of Frank Toplak.
She was preceded on death by her parents, John M. and Sophia “Sally: Schael; sister, Carol Ann Toplak; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Rita R. and Thomas H. Basler.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the El Salvador Fund at St. Dominic Church, 3450 Norwood Road, Shaker Heights, OH 44122, or the American Cancer Society, 10501 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44106.
