Obituary for Margaret J Bruening

Margaret J. (nee Lenehan) Bruening, 86, of Painesville Township, passed away peacefully and gracefully Sunday, January 17, 2021. Born September 4, 1934, in Cleveland, she lived in Chesterland before moving to Lake County.
She graduated with honors from Sacred Heart Academy and Ursuline College and with a Master of Science degree from John Carroll University. As a dedicated Catholic high school science teacher, Margaret taught at Villa Angela Academy for eight years and retired from Lake Catholic High School after 19 years of teaching. She served on the Board of Trustees of the Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair and was a member of the John Carroll Faculty Wives. Margaret was also a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association of Physics Teachers, and the Catholic High School and Academy Lay Teachers Association “CHALTA,” where she had served as secretary.
She was proud of her Irish heritage and participated in many events as a member of the Irish American Club-East Side Inc. in Euclid. She greatly enjoyed attending her extended family’s annual Campbell-Conway Reunion and the biennial Bruening Reunion both in Cleveland. Margaret enjoyed playing Bridge with friends and belonged to various Bridge groups. She volunteered at the Cleveland Playhouse and wore her Red Coat proudly. She belonged to the Lake County YMCA in Painesville and the Silver Sneakers. Family was the most important to Margaret and she loved and enjoyed being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Teaching, mentoring, and caring for her grandchildren was a priority.
Margaret was the loving mother of Robert X. “Bud” Bruening (Rosana Soares), Anne Lyons, Dennis (Laura) Bruening, Philip Bruening (Jill Janes), John P. (Nancy) Bruening, and Mary Jane (Raymond) Healy; loving grandmother of 26; great-grandmother of 14; cherished sister of John F. “Jack” (Sheryl) Lenehan; beloved aunt of many nieces and nephews. She also will be dearly missed by other relatives, friends, and former students.
She was preceded in death by her son, Joseph A. Bruening, LCDR (Ret.); parents, Anthony and Catherine (nee Leneghan) Lenehan of Cleveland and of Ballycroy, Co. Mayo, Ireland; and sister, Mary (Richard, dec.) Tobin.

Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, a private family mass will be held at St. Gabriel’s Church in Concord Township with Fr. Mark Hollis officiating. Burial will be in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chesterland.
