Obituary for Kenneth R Gottschall

Kenneth R. Gottschall, 83, of Mentor, passed away Feb. 1, 2024.
Ken was born to Roselia and Carl Gottschall on Aug. 1, 1940, in Lilydale, N.Y.
After high school, he joined the Army, was stationed in Korea, and learned to be a talented draftsman. He had a successful career in Information Technology as a Systems Analyst at the East Ohio Gas company. His love of learning led him to night school, where he earned a Bachelor of Business degree at Cleveland State University and graduated Summa Cum Laude.
He was a wonderful and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who always taught the values of integrity, respect and the importance of education. Ken was the “phone a friend” guy you called when you needed answers on jeopardy. He had a passion for cooking and was creating a cookbook.
Ken was a past President of the Orco Sportsman Association and past captain for the Kingswood Shooting team, where he loved competitive pistol shooting with the Cuyahoga County Pistol League. Star Trek was one of his favorites and he was a true “Trekkie” and owns many pieces of memorabilia. You could always find Ken researching something, some of his favorites were science and hydrogen energy. Everybody loved having a conversation with Ken because you would always learn a new fact from him. He was an avid animal lover and throughout his lifetime loved many dogs. During the summer, you could find Ken on his deck enjoying a good cigar and a gin and tonic. He could enter a room full of strangers and be friends with anyone before he left. Ken was Mickey’s biggest cheerleader, encouraging and providing tech support for her wonderful artwork. And he was also an artist, making amazing stained-glass pieces.
Ken is survived by his wife, Mickey; and children, Tom (Dynita) Gottschall, Kim Disandis (John Fiocca), and Amanda (Garrett) Maguire. Ken was proud to be a grandfather to Alyssa (Disandis), Nina (Disandis), Thomas (Gottschall), Finn (Maguire); great-grandfather to Blakely (Disandis) and Brenlyn (Gottschall); brother-in-law of John (Debbie) Stein and August (Drew) Stein; and uncle to Johnny (Bethany) Stein, Danny (Sarah) Stein.
Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024, at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center St. (Route 615, north of Route 2), in Mentor, with a Celebration of Life and Military Honors at 7 p.m.
