Obituary for Jay Battung

Funeral Mass for Jay Battung, 75, of Willoughby, will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022, at St. John Vianney Church, 7575 Bellflower Road, Mentor. Fr. Marty Polito will officiate.
Jay passed away Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022, at his home.
Born June 29, 1947, in Pittsburgh, Pa., he had lived in Euclid for 21 years before moving to Lake County more than 47 years ago.
Jay was a 1965 graduate of St. Joseph High School, where he was a member of the football team and a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, serving from 1967 to 1969, receiving the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1960 Device, Combat Infantry Badge First Award, two Overseas Bars, and recognition as an Expert Marksman. He was also a member of St. John Vianney Church in Mentor, where he helped in the casino at the Parish Festival, served as Athletic Director at St. Justin Martyr Church in Eastlake, where he also coached football and basketball, was assistant coach for the Eastlake North High Girls Varsity Basketball program and as Junior Varsity coach, was active with Eastlake Youth Sports, where he served as President and Treasurer of the Eastlake Youth Basketball program and a referee for the Willoughby and Willowick Youth Basketball organizations. Jay was a great supporter of Lake Catholic High School, where he served as the Athletic Boosters President, Secretary and Treasurer, coordinated help at football and all athletic events, and ran the concession stand. Jay had a great love for flag football and was a founding member of both Mentor and Willoughby Flag Football, and was the coach and quarterback of the New Image Champion Flag Team. He was a member of the U.S.F.T.L. Hall of Fame, where he served for many years as a referee and player. Mary was the love of his life. His wife, children and grandchildren were the most important part of his life.
He was the beloved husband of 47 years to Mary S. (nee Sweeney) Battung; loving father of Jason C. (Mara) Battung and Nicole L. (Beau) Roquemore; cherished grandfather of Ben, Ellie and Colette; dear brother of Jeanne Sierka, Jill (Larry) Myers and Janet (Jerry) Borac; brother-in-law of Bob Myers; and uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents, Jack A. and Heide M. (nee DuScheid) Battung; sisters, Jacquelyn (Richard, dec.) Bolander and Judee Myers; and brother-in-law, Ray Sierka.
Family will receive friends from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2022, at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center St. (Route 615, north of Route 2), in Mentor. Private burial will be in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Seville.
