Obituary for James H Silverblatt, MD

James H Silverblatt, MD, 64, of Mentor, passed away Oct. 27, 2022, at his home after a courageous three-year battle with cancer.
Born March 5, 1958, in Pittsburgh, Pa., James attended Shady Side Academy, where his football, baseball, and basketball skills made him a well-known figure and team captain of an undefeated 1976 football team. He continued to pursue his love of baseball and football at Yale University, where he studied medicine, following in his father’s footsteps, before earning his medical degree at the Chicago Medical School in 1984.
James made serving the Cleveland area as an internal medicine physician his life’s work following his residency at The Cleveland Clinic from 1984 to 1987. His steadfast dedication to treatment through holistic, thoughtful care over medical-industrial solutions gained him a cult-following as an alternative “old school” practitioner. His familiar and fun-loving bedside manner and his willingness to go above and beyond, including house calls, endeared him personally to his patients.
To his family, he will always be known as a man who never quit, the hardest worker in the room, an eternal athlete, a grillmaster, a lover of music who kept his drum set in the living room and a harmonica in his car, a founder of the Roguey Club, a Harley guy, a lizard, a dog-enthusiast, an avid outdoorsman and adventurer, a lover of all things water, and the best husband, father and brother imaginable, whose laughter we can still hear, and whose sense of humor continues to hold his family together through this difficult time.
James is survived by his wife, Lee Ann (nee Hendrickson); children, Leigh (KC), Emma (Ryan), Trevor and Max Silverblatt; stepsons, John (Kelly), and Jake (Lauren) Distler; grandchildren, Landon, Chandler, Levi and Frances; sisters, Sue Ellen Silverblatt Alderman and Cindy Silverblatt Cherry; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Marvin and Shirley (nee Brody) Silverblatt; and his devoted companion dogs, Haven, Molly, Tank and Maybel.
A public memorial visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center St. (Route 615, north of Route 2), in Mentor, with a Celebration of Life service at 3:30 p.m.
Contributions in his name can be made to the Lake County Humane Society, 7564 Tyler Blvd., Mentor, OH 44060.
