Obituary for James L Brown

Dr. James L. Brown, 77, of Painesville, passed away Feb. 6, 2023, in Cleveland.
He was born April 7, 1945, in Kansas City, Kan., the eldest son of the late Louis and Margaret L. (nee Stinson) Brown, and grew up in the Turner Community in Wyandotte County, Kan.
Jim was a 1963 graduate of Turner High School, where he was an honor student and drum major, and received his BSE (1967) and MA (1968) in English from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, Kan. His post graduate studies in English Education was from 1969 to 1973 at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kan., received his PH.D. in English Education in 1975 from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan., was a NEH Fellow in the English Department at the University of Texas, Austin, Texas in 1978, attained his Certificate in Theology at St. Luke’s Seminary at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., and was a 1990 Exchange Professor at South Cheshire College in Crewe, Cheshire, England.
Dr. Brown began his teaching career in 1968 in the English Department at Kansas City Kansas Community College and became the first Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts at the college in 1993, and retired from KCKCC in 2001. In 2001, he became the Dean of Arts and Humanities at Lakeland Community College in Willoughby and retired from LCC in 2006. From 1986 to 2000, Jim worked as a consultant evaluator for the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools/Higher Education Division. He was ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacons at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Mission, Kan., and from 1982 to 2017, served as Deacon at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, St. James Episcopal Church in Painesville, and St. Andrew Episcopal Church in Mentor.
Jim had served on many boards with several organizations throughout his life including the Wyandotte County YMCA Swim Team Parents, Turner House Board, Episcopal Diocese Council and founded the Choice Food Pantry at St. Andrew Episcopal Church in Mentor.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Beth; sons, Brandon (Lina) of Silver Spring, Md., and Travis (Amy) of Virginia Beach, Va.; grandchildren, Jack, Benjamin, Louis, Vivian and Nicolas; and brother, Dan (Sharon) of Overland Park, Kan.
Family receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, March 31, 2023, at St. Andrew Episcopal Church, 7989 Little Mountain Road, Mentor, where a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 1, 2023. A committal service will also be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 24, 2023, at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Mission, Kan. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name are suggested to the Food Pantry at St. Andrew Episcopal Church in Mentor, Marching Band Program at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan., Endowment Fund at St. Andrew Episcopal Church in Mentor, Endowment Fund at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Mission, Kan., Endowment Fund at KCKCC in Kansas City, Kan., and Hospice of the Western Reserve in Cleveland.
