Obituary for Elizabeth L "Betty" Walsh

Funeral Mass for Elizabeth L. “Betty” (nee Shurman) Walsh, 80, Painesville Township, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, 2023, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 9925 Johnnycake Ridge Road, Concord Township. (Family and friends are asked to meet at church.)
Betty passed away March 22, 2023.
Born Oct. 6, 1942, to Edward and Bernadette Shurman in Pittsburgh Pa., she spent most of her childhood in Euclid, where she attended St. Christine Catholic School, graduated as valedictorian from Regina High School, and obtained her bachelor’s degree in education from St. John’s College in Cleveland.
She married Michael P. Walsh, Sr. June 27, 1964, and had six children, Leo, Michael, Brian, Beth, Tom and Katie. Mike and Betty created close friendships and happy memories raising their children in Mentor, primarily in their home on McKinley Street. Betty’s house was often filled with children’s laughter and antics. She was devoted to her parents, Ed and Bernie and was always hosting family outings with both the Shurman and Walsh families. Aunt Betty will be greatly missed by many nieces and nephews, who developed close relationships with her.
For more than 30 years, Betty was a devoted fifth grade teacher at St. Justin Martyr School in Eastlake, where she made lifelong friends who became like a second family. Not an outdoorsman herself, Betty enjoyed taking her class to the annual camping trips and volunteered to chaperone school trips to Washington, D.C.
The first in her family to attend college, Betty passed on her love of learning to her children and grandchildren. She was an avid reader, loved the local public libraries, and enjoyed crafts, especially crochet and needle crafts. While Betty went to many sporting events to cheer on her children and grandchildren, she had a special love for theater and the arts.
Betty’s 15 grandchildren were her greatest joy in life, and she was always the last to leave any family gathering. Grandma Walsh would often bake with her grandkids, and she loved a good game of Apples to Apples. You would find her at any family event with a smile on her face during a conversation with one of her grandkids. Betty would often share stories of her younger years and of her own kid’s shenanigans, much to their dismay.
Betty’s Catholic faith was important to her. She volunteered with the Christ Child Society and served as a catechist at St. Gabriel Parish for many years. For the past four years, Betty regularly attended the 4 p.m. Mass at St. Mary’s in Painesville.
Betty is survived by her children, Leo, Michael (Mildred), Brian (Stephanie), Elizabeth Walsh-Moorman (Scott Moorman), Thomas (Rachel) and Mary Kathleen (Kevyn) Scott; grandchildren, Brendan, Patricia, Shannon, Andrew, Kevin, Colin, Ryan, Allison, Kathleen, Megan, Patrick, Margaret, Sean, Bridget and Erin; siblings, Antoinette (Jim) Franks, Edward (Sally) Shurman and Janet Kaufman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael; parents, Edward and Bernadette; and countless brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 27, at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center St. (Route 615, north of Route 2), in Mentor. A graveside service will follow the Mass at All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Catholic Community Foundation Angel Scholarship Fund or a charity of your choice.
