Obituary for Douglas W. Harber

Douglas W. Harber, 75, of Mentor, passed away Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Hospice of the Western Reserve in Cleveland.
He was born July 18, 1947, in Pennington Gap, Va.
Douglas was a 1965 graduate of Willoughby South High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Miami University in 1970. He also earned his Master of Education degree from Cleveland State University. He was a proud member of the Northeastern Ohio Education Association, Ohio Education Association, and the National Education Association.
Douglas taught Social Studies at Mayfield High School for 32 years and was the department chair for many years. He also coached girl’s tennis and was an advisor for the Model United Nations Club. He could often be found at Todd Field or Gilson Park coaching his daughter’s softball team when she was younger.
Douglas loved to travel with his loving wife and daughter to many of the United States most important historical monuments such as Gettysburg, Pa., Ft. Sumter, S.C., Boston, Mass., Williamsburg, Va., Valley Forge, Pa., and of course, Washington D.C. He was also an avid reader of all things historical and political and loved keeping up to date on the nation’s many political and economic changes.
Douglas was the loving father of Kelly Elizabeth Harber; cherished grandfather of Shane Robert Snyder and Justin James Snyder; brother of Deborah Harber; uncle of Robin Ernst and Harold Ernst; and nephew of Jerelene Harber of Knoxville, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Sally Ann (nee Marcella) Harber; and parents Harold and Ziona (nee Pace) Harber.
Family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at The Abbey of Willoughby, 38011 Euclid Avenue (located on the grounds of the McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home), in Willoughby. Burial with Prayer Service will be 12 p.m. Saturday prior to visitation at Willoughby Cemetery with Deacon David Chordas officiating.
