Obituary for David G "Irish" Dawson
Funeral Mass for David G. “Irish” Dawson, 81, of Chardon, will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Church, 401 North St., Chardon.
Dave passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Township.
Born Feb. 17, 1940, in New York, N.Y., to Jerry and Elizabeth (nee Young) Dawson, he had been a resident of Geauga County for more than 50 years, living in Burton before moving to Chardon.
He joined the Navy at the age of 17, and traveled the world. Returning from those adventures, his wanderlust was not satisfied. Dave then joined the Sly Fox Motorcycle Club and raised heck throughout the U.S., but always found a small Catholic Church to attend Sunday Mass.
Dave married his first wife, Sandy, had three kids, ran for office, and mourned her passing. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Chardon, the Tin Can Sailors, and the Irish American Club-East Side Inc. in Euclid, where he met his longtime loved and second wife, Patricia. Together, they expanded their family to four children.
His nickname “Irish,” didn’t come without the required demands. Dave could talk to anyone, anywhere at any time. Dave met more people than most could hope to and was ready for time that talking didn’t solve problems. He could spin a story so well that the listener could remember and retell decades later. Sharing a drink with him was to be looked forward to. His Catholic faith was never far from his mind and he loved the Lord.
Dave had worked at General Electric for more than 25 years and continued on at Lincoln Electric. He loved technology, enjoyed all electronics, even if he didn’t know how to use them, and puttering in his workshop. He passed that love of tinkering on to his family. Dave loved motorcycles, as well as collecting films and movies on DVD. His family and spending time with his wife was the highlight of his days. Dave was also known for his willingness to help anyone in need.
He was the beloved husband of 38 years to Patricia A. (nee Haugh) Dawson; loving father of Kelly L. (Scott) DeBoer, Sean P. (Sarah) Dawson, Maureen E. Dawson, Kevin M. (Meng) Dawson; cherished grandfather of Conor, Ben, Jordan and Hope; great-grandfather of Caiden; brother of Patricia (Pete) Urquhart and Betsy (Gary) LeBlanc; and uncle of nieces and nephews.
Dave was preceded in death by his first wife, Sandra (nee Jurek) Dawson; and his parents.
Family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Ave., Willoughby. Burial will be in Shadyside Cemetery in Auburn Township.
