Best friends

I met Stan on the side of the road whne he stopped to help a friend of mine whose distributor ground decided that 70 years of service was enough.  Stan beat me there and was in full trouble shooting mode when I arrived. Well I had no idea he was a master mechanic so I started asking questions and Stan thought "Who is this a sshole".  Well between the three of us we got Frank's 1949 Plymouth Buinesss coupe running so now we could inspect Stan's '55 gasser.  We LOVED it and soon we all became great friends. Stan jumped into heping me any way he could and we went drag racing - total amateur racers - having a blast at every race we ever went to.  Didn't matter how crooked he lined me up or how far out I had the tuneup on the motor - we ALWAYS had fun!  Our last race being the Meltdown Drags in Byron, Illinois. Stan worked all week getting his truck ready because he wanted the comfort of his AC - that and maybe the last time we towed out with my '47 he didn't wanna risk runnign out of gas again - I promise Stan I will get that gas gauge fixed....one of these days. Anyways to the very end he was bustin' his butt making sure that WE could have a blast at the races. On Saturdays he'd call and ask if "I wanted to go roll in the junk" which meant we'd take a trip to HGR and see if we could drag any junk home that neither of us really needed.  We worked on his big truck the day before he went in the hospital - that was Stan ALWAYS bustin' his butt workin' on something.  He was the kind of guy that would do anything and I mean ANYTHING for a friend - he proved that time and time again. I claimed that he was my best friend, but make no mistake that was NOT an exclusive club - I will venture a guess that I stand with dozens of people who will rightfully claim that honor.  THAT was Stan - he made you feel like you were at the top of his friend list - it's just how he treated people.  What an honor I had in being one of his friends - I will dearly miss his cussing and wisdom.   See you at the big end buddy.
